High Speed Rail Workforce Symposium: Topics

Project and Symposium Introduction

Welcome to the HSR Workforce Symposium course.

This course was developed around the presentations made during 2012 High Speed Rail Workforce Symposium,on September 19th at the Chicago Hilton. The first presentations introduce the HSRLS project and then continue to cover several topics ranging from HSR workforce development in the U.S. and abroad to examples of online technologies used for transportation education and training. We have also added some supplementary materials on the discussion topics.

High Speed Rail Workforce Development in the U.S. and Abroad

This section will introduce you to HSR workforce development and related needs within and outside the United States. While U.S. is taking its first steps in HSR development, there are several countries that have already implemented dedicated high speed lines and improved rolling stock, as well as education initiatives to train the workforce.

The presentations discuss the future demands for workforce in the U.S. and provide examples of approaches adapted in other countries.

Online Training and Education

While distance learning is not a new concept, use of online technologies to provide higher education and professional training in transportation hasn’t been widely adapted. The growth of web-based training in other sectors has prompted us to examine the viability of online learning in rail transportation, especially high speed rail.

This section features several speakers detailing their experiences with computer-based training. They will provide some pros and cons that they ran into while using or developing online training systems, the results they got with these systems, and will hopefully get your gears turning about how the rail community can utilize these or similar systems in training their workforce.
